Wanna borrow a jack

One day I went to a lawyer friend for advice.

“I’m in real trouble” I said. “My neighbors across the road are going on vacation for a month; and instead of boarding their dogs they are going to keep them locked up and a woman is coming to feed them, if she doesn’t forget. Meanwhile they’ll be lonely and bark all day and howl all night, and I won’t be able to sleep. I’ll either have to call the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to haul them away or I’ll go berserk and go over there and shoot them and then when my neighbors return, they’ll go berserk and come over and shoot me.” (more…)

Acorns and pumpkins

An old poem describes a woman walking through a meadow, meditating on nature. While strolling about, she came upon a field of golden pumpkins. In the corner of the field stood a majestic, huge oak tree.

She sat under the oak tree musing on the strange twists in nature which put tiny acorns on huge branches and huge pumpkins on tiny vines. She thought to herself, “God blundered with Creation! He should have put the small acorns on the tiny vines and the large pumpkins on the huge branches.”

Nodding off, the woman stretched out under the oak tree for a nap. A few minutes after falling asleep she was awakened by a tiny acorn bouncing off her nose. Chuckling to herself, she rubbed her nose and thought, “Maybe God was right after all!”

A gelotologist

What do you call the person who studies laughter?

 Answer: Gelotologist

Gelotology (from the Greek gelos, meaning laughter) is the study of laughter and its effects on the body, from a psychological and physiological perspective. Its proponents often advocate induction of laughter on therapeutic grounds in complementary medicine. – Wikipedia

Physician visits survey

75-90% of primary physician visits are due to stress.

Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger – whether it’s real or imagined – the body’s defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction, or the stress response.

Effects of chronic stress

The body doesn’t distinguish between physical and psychological threats. When you’re stressed over a busy schedule, an argument with a friend, a traffic jam, or a mountain of bills, your body reacts just as strongly as if you were facing a life-or-death situation. If you have a lot of responsibilities and worries, your emergency stress response may be “on” most of the time. The more your body’s stress system is activated, the easier it is to trip and the harder it is to shut off.

Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.

The importance of valuing time

I was reminded with a short story comparing two employees, Employee A and Employee B, who have given the same load of job for a day by their boss.  They have different approaches and techniques in accomplishing the task and though it was not a competition on who finishes the job first, it was Employee A who is more skillful and smarter completed the task ahead. And considering that it was the only task given for a day, Employee A had a privilege to sit down, waiting and letting the time passes until the end of the day. When their boss checked the outputs, he lauded both employees for the job well done.

By looking into the situation cited, I commend the performance of Employee A. However, it would be more productive for him if he utilized the remaining time for either planning for his next day task or investing a time for self-improvement rather than by just sitting down and waiting for the close hour of the day.  ”Carpe Diem” as Romans said. These words have great meaning for our everyday life – these means “Live the Day” or better said “Organize your day.

Let us not waste every single time of the day especially the remaining privilege time at work. Time has its essence and it has time by itself that when you wasted it, you cannot reset it.
